Hey Everyone!
I wanted to write a quick post about a simple trick I use to create great sermon titles.
This is fresh on my mind because I’m working on this sermon right now.
Here’s a quick example of how your sermon titles (or sermon series titles) can be extremely effective without having to be overly creative sermon titles.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you have to come up with the most creative sermon titles in the world to attract people to show up to hear the message.
The opposite is often true.
Sometimes the simpler and more straightforward titles trump the ultra creative ones.
I told you it was simple…
This Sunday I’m starting a new sermon series on the book of Revelation.
I could have titled the series all kinds of things:
“Unlocking the Mysteries of Revelation”
“Revelation Revealed”
“Revelation: Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask”
Don’t get me wrong. All these will work. They’re not bad titles.
But for this new series I went with the simple title, “Revelation.”
The reason I decided to go simple here is because the Book of Revelation has enough self-generated interest. Most people are automatically interested because of all of the end-time themes in the book.
I didn’t need to come up with an extremely creative title to generate interest. The interest is already there. In this instance, simpler is better.
So here’s the rule of thumb: When the subject matter you are preaching about generates a lot of internal interest by itself… go with a simpler, shorter sermon title.
In cases like this, an overly creative title actually detracts from the pull of the sermon. Go simple here.
By the way, this is the email I sent a few hours ago to our entire congregation. It lets them know what this Sunday’s message is about:

Hey Life Pointe Family!
We kick off a new sermon series this Sunday called, “Revelation.”
We’re going to answer everything you wanted to know about the Book of Revelation… but were afraid to ask!
See You Sunday!
Pastor Randall

Within a few minutes of sending that email to the congregation I received lots of feedback.
People in the congregation responded about how much they were looking forward to hearing this new series on Revelation.
My guess… this Sunday will be a much larger than normal crowd.
So remember, it doesn’t always take extremely creative sermon titles to connect with people.
In some cases, simple and straightforward works. It works really well.
Start using this simple trick and your next sermon title will be a great one!

Randall Garing
